Resarch paper summery / Letter to the President

16 November 2009

President Barack Obama
The White House Office
1600 Pennsylvania Ave. N.W.
Washington, DC 20500

Dear President Obama,

Since 1925, when the ACLU published an advertisement in Tennessee newspapers that asked for teachers, who were willing to be defendants in a case, later called the Scopes Monkey Trail, there has been a great deal of discord in the United States on the teaching of Macroevolution and Intelligent design in the classroom. There has, in fact, been a great deal of tax payer money spent to defend a theory that has not been proven.

Many Scientists are pushing that the theory of Macroevolution has already been proven while ignoring the evidence that it has not. Instead of presenting the truths as truth, the theories as theories, and allowing students to critically think through the information, we are presenting half truths.

What is truth? Is it subjective? Absolutely not! There is a part of evolution that should be brought to the forefront of science and Biology classes across the United States. It should be brought forward because it has been proven, without a doubt, to be true. Microevolution is that proven truth.
It is my recommendation to:
1. To put a stay on any lawsuits about the teaching of macroevolution and intelligent design in the classroom by the ACLU or other parties.
2. Make a committee of professionals on ALL sides of the issue to create a unifying, and bipartisan curriculum that brings microevolution to the forefront, and Macroevolution and intelligent design as a theoretical mention.
3. Reeducate the teachers to encourage their students to explore and learn the truths of science while allowing the students to decide for themselves what they believe the Origins of life to be.

Sincerely,

My research process

This paper turned out to be a lot harder to write than I had originally anticipated. Though I am not a big fan of evolution, or Darwinism in general, the research process required me to look beyond my knowledge base, and opened my eyes to just how intense the battle over the teaching of Macro evolution really is. I discovered how closed minded the people on both sides of the issue really are.
The problem with this battle is that the people caught in the middle are our children. We are literally allowing children in our schools to be lied to so that scientists can save their precious reputations.
The other concerning fact is that we are ignoring the one area of evolution that has been proven true. That area is micro evolution which is the change of a species over time. The species becomes a new breed, or subspecies, but does not change species.
After writing this paper, I believe more now than before, that it is our responsibility as parents, future parents, and citizens of this nation, to make sure that our children are taught the truth in the classrooms.

LETTER TO THE MAN WHO PAID OFF THE SMITHSONIAN INSTITUTE

An Open Letter to the Amazing Randi

Dear Amazing Randi:
I just read your widely publicized letter to the Smithsonian about its "http://www.evolutionnews.org/index.php?title=wonders_of_the_smithsonian&more=1&c=1&tb=1&pb=1" to air "http://www.privilegedplanet.com", Discovery Institute's film on intelligent design. You find it "impossible to comprehend" why the Smithsonian has chosen to screen such a film. And, I see that you are willing to pay the Smithsonian Institute $20,000 so that they don't do it.

I want you to know, you're doing the right thing. I figure the American people are dumb as posts. Who knows what ideas a film like that could put into their heads? You haven't seen the film either, am I right? See no evil, see no evil is what I always say.

But here's the thing, Randi. I was sort of planning to screen the film right here in my apartment in Paris. I've got a little screening room I call The Smithsonian right between the bathroom and the kitchen, I sort of figured I'd invite some friends over, open a couple cans of suds, sort of kick back and enjoy. Now you fork over $20,000 to the Smithsonian not to show the film and right away I'm showing the film here in Paris — that's just not going to work for you, if you catch my drift.

But hey, what are friends for? I mean for $20,000, I can make my screening of the The Privileged Planet go away too. An extra $10,000 and we spend the evening reading aloud from Daniel Dennett's autobiography. I hear it's a real snoozer, no chance at all that anyone's going to walk away from an evening like that with poor thoughts about the cosmos or anything like that. You handle the refreshments — nothing much, some cocktail franks maybe, a few kegs of French beer — and I knock ten percent off the price. What do you say?

Now I know what you're thinking, Randi, because to tell you the truth, I've been thinking the same thing. You're thinking, hey, I'm out forty thousand seminolas to can this film in Washington DC and Paris, and right away, some yutz is going to figure it's show time in Oklahoma or Nebraska or even in New York, and what do I do then? I'm way ahead of you on this one. I've talked with my buddies at the Discovery Institute and for the right kind of donation, we poleax the film completely. That's right. It disappears itself, if you catch my drift. You get to keep the negatives, we keep the director's cut in our safe for insurance. Is this some sort of deal, or what? Now I know what you're thinking because I've been there myself. I know what you're thinking, the Discovery Institute? Bunch of right-wing weirdoes, am I right? Hey, it's not like that at all, Randi, I got to tell you. We here at the Discovery Institute, we're businessmen, if you catch my drift. We want to do the right thing and we want to do it at the right price. Look at it this way. The right kind of donation gets you total peace of mind. You really can't buy that kind of protection, only in this case you can.

So give me a ring, or send me a note. I'd like to tell you we take checks, but you're a businessmen, too, am I right? It's got to be cash. More than you've got lying around? Not a problem. Just give George Soros a call. Tell him it's for a friend. Do it now.
Figure

You'll sleep better at night.

Your admirer,

David Berlinski

PS: I write a lot of stuff for Commentary, too. For the right price, I don't have to write anything at all. Think it over. Let me know.

MY GROWTH AS A WRITER

I have always enjoyed writing, so, when i signed up for this class I was excited to get started. It was my goal to do the best job I could do.
As I learned how to progress with my research throughout the term, I learned how to evaluate the information that i was looking at, and my preconceived opinions changed. I started off hating the word Evolution, until I learned what it actually was. I was able to come up with a proposal ( see letter to the president) that I am considering sending.
This class has given me valuable tools that, as an Anthropology/archaeology major, I will use for my entire career.

Drawing out Leviathan claims to be a thesis paper, however it is written on the high school or lower division college reading level. Even though the author is writing about dinosaur research specifically, he is making a similar statement about alleviating the science wars.
It is my intention to reference this text in my paper for a collaborative effect and to draw both sides together. The author clearly shows how there are two sides of the argument and how this conflict generates confusion by the wildly differing opinions of both sides. In addition to this, the book shows how confusion can also be caused by varying theories within the scientific industry

Oard, Michael (2004). FROZEN IN TIME The wooly Mammoth, the Ice age, and the Bible, Green Forest, AR: Master Books
Frozen in Time was written by a meteorologist who set out to conteract the current theories of the ice age. This book was written for college level readers with an interest in alternative theories on ancient earth evolution. His theories conteract the current scientific thought of how the Wooly Mammoth went extinct.
I intend on using this text to show an example of a right sided argument through citation of his research on the Wooly mamoth and the Ice age. In some cases this book will contradict Drawing Out Laviathan simply because it comes from the creationist side of the issue. Contrastly, Because Michael Ord's book uses intelligent argument and facts based on actual research, it also shows some collaberation with the main stream scientific thinking.

THE HUMAN SPECIES Is the textbook used at red Rocks Community College for the basic study of Physical, or Biological, Anthropology. This textbook provides an academic study of the Human species from genetics to the theoretical relationship of evolution of man from Primates. This text will be used to explain Microevolutionary truths, and also will be used as a reference to examples which I will use in my argument.
Though this textbook takes a solid stand against Creationism, or the use of any religious ideas within the scientific communities, it provides the academic information that is required to create my argument.

Gould, Stephen Jay (2002). The Structure of Evolutionary Theory, Cambridge, MA: Harvard University Press
This academic Thesis has helped me to understand, in great detail, the theory behind evolution. Even though it was a bit hard to read without an unabridged dictionary nearby, it was fascinating to read how much further evolution has expanded beyond Darwin’s original theory. I plan on using this all inclusive text to clarify exactly what Darwin meant originally when he wrote his theory, and what the modern thoughts are on the structure of evolution.
Since this book was written and published by Harvard University, it is going to be used as one of my scholarly resources in deciphering the evolutionary truths from theories. Its first chapter is of great interest in my research since it deals with “defining and revising the structure of evolutionary theory."

I was unimpressed by this book. It seemed to be a childish expose of Creationism Bashing that I found distasteful, and written in a vengeful, unprofessional manner. That being said, I will use this book to show how an unnecessary argument has been waged by a few in the scientific industry. This argument is based upon partial truths and academic theorizing of events that had no solid groundwork under it. I will show that it is biased authors, like MR Dawkins, who fuel the fire by presenting theory as fact, and the unknown as a non-truth. This book will also help me to show how an author can easily lead the impressionable youth and uneducated public into believing their views.
